"But they were amazed at His teaching, for He taught as one having authority, and not as the scribes." Mark 1:22
When we first read Jesus' teachings in the New Testament,
the Christian tendency seems to be to think of Jesus as the originator of those teachings, that He's saying something that has never been said before.
At least that's always been MY tendency.
But as i become more acquainted with the Scriptures and indeed the writings of the old rabbis, i see quotes from them everywhere.
And i've heard this used to denigrate Jesus' teaching. For example, The Golden Rule concept appears in cultures throughout the world, and was famously formulated by Rabbi Hillel a century before Jesus.
But i don't see that as nullifying the teaching. The crux of it is here: "He taught as one having authority...." Not someone quoting someone else, but an author might explain definitively what a passage means.

Ah, the heart of the matter. Who is this guy?
But that would lead us to other incidents in His life. some things simply do not change.
Who is this guy?
